- Second Indonesian outlet opens in Mangga Dua Mall, Jakarta
- Franchise Opens First Singapore Kiosk
- Mr. Jeremy Lee To Head Global Franchise Program
Singapore, 25th June 2018 – Khun Thai Tea, the Best Thai Milk Tea and the world’s only International Brand Thai milk tea, is expanding in Asia – one mall at a time.
Originally launched in the Philippines, the franchise recently announced a major boost to its regional business with the signing of a 10-year master franchiser for Indonesia.
Plans for the franchise’s expansion in the world’s biggest Muslim-majority nation are now well underway with a second outlet open for business at Mangga Dua Mall, Jl. Mangga Dua Raya, Jakarta. Mangga Dua enjoys fame as a shopping haven and is one of the capital city’s premium shopping districts.
The first outlet opened officially at Ambassador Mall, 4th Floor Unit Counter 23, JI.Prof.DR.Satrio, South Jakarta, Indonesia. Country master franchise holder, Mr. Vincent Yonathan Wiguna, said these are the first and second of 20 outlets set to open within Indonesia in 2018.
Said Mr. Wiguna, “Indonesia has very big potential in the Thai milk tea business and we are fortunate to be selected by Khun Thai Tea International to bring authentic Thai milk tea to Indonesians.”
He added that the Indonesian master franchise will also be the first in the country to introduce Khun Thai Tea’s new Macciato Collection of Thai Milk Tea.
Making your way to these two Indonesian outlets? Khun Thai Tea is located on the ground floor of Mangga Dua Mall, and near the food court on Level 4 at Ambassador Mall.
Khun Thai Tea Opens In Singapore Finally
Singaporeans have not been left out as the island-state has finally seen its long wait for a Khun Thai Tea outlet come to an end.
The new kiosk, located at Basement 1 of Century Square mall in the Tampines Town heartlands (turn right after riding the escalator down), was originally set to open at the end of 2017, but had to delay its launch due to nine-month long major renovations mall-wide.
With the mall revamp completed at last, Khun Thai Tea opened its doors in Singapore with a bang on 6th June 2018. Members of the press were invited to free-tastings of its authentic and scrumptious Thai and Asian-inspired food and beverages over the 9th June weekend.
Said Singapore’s franchise owner Mr. Nelson, “Khun Thai Tea is a Thai black tea, which is quite a niche market in Singapore. We would like to bring this brand to Singapore to let people know that Thai tea actually tastes good. It is better than other milk teas brands that are already in Singapore. We are proud to bring this brand to Singapore and let people have a taste of authentic Thai ice black tea.”
He added, “We have tried other brands here and compared the taste; if you try our tea you will realise that it tastes better.”
In addition to the taste of Khun Thai Tea, Mr. Jong said Khun Thai Tea’s global brand name helps as well. “When customers hear that we are actually a global franchise, they have more confidence in our quality.”
Khun Thai Tea has high hopes for its business in Singapore: in a nation famous for its love of good food and drinks, and where food trends originating in the heartlands have been known to turn into headlining sensations overnight, Khun Thai Tea is in a unique position to add its brand of authentic Thai ice black tea to the national menu – permanently.

BACKGROUNDER
Khun Thai Tea began life as a pushcart run by Auntie Marlee in Bangkok’s ultra-chic nightlife and dining street, Sukhumvit Soi 11. After creating her proprietary Thai ice black tea (Thai: ‘cha-yen’) recipe in 1955, revellers began flocking to her pushcart after dark, making it the best-kept secret in Sukhumvit Soi 11.
Nearly six decades later Auntie Marlee announced her retirement in 2016, appointing Filipino Nancy Padilla to carry on her legacy in the Philippines, where the closely guarded recipe would be made for the first time outside of Thailand.
Ms. Padilla’s first outlet was named Khun Thai Tea in homage to Auntie Marlee (‘Khun’ is Thai for respect) and opened in June 2016 at SM Mall of Asia, Manila, Philippines. Her second and third Khun Thai Tea outlets followed in quick succession at Star City Amusement Park, Manila, and MegaMall Manila, in Ortigas.
Mr. Jeremy Lee was appointed to manage global franchise rights for the brand worldwide.
Franchise opportunities were made available in the Philippines from June 2017. In July 2017, a slew of new outlets were announced to open in Manila over the second half of 2017.
Said Mr. Lee at the time, “The success of Khun Thai Tea in the capital city of Philippines has confirmed the potential of an Asia-wide market for our unique brand of Thai ice black tea. We are now planning for rapid expansion across Asia and will strive to bring a Khun Thai Tea branch to every Asian shopping mall.”
An Indonesian master franchiser was subsequently announced in 2018, whilst the first Singaporean Khun Thai Tea kiosk opened in June that same year.
